BEAVER SCOUT CARDBOARD CITY SLEEPOVER 5th-6th JUNE  2015

Who would have thought that a few cardboard boxes could keep Beaver Scouts occupied for so long?  Beavers thoroughly enjoyed creating their sleeping quarters for the night.  This sleepover was the first night away from family for most of our Beavers & they did themselves proud.  We asked them about it afterwards—these are their own words: ‘Awesome’, ‘Brilliant, ‘Epic’, ‘Life changing!’, ‘Fab’, ‘Cracking!’

DISTRICT SCOUT COOKING COMPETITION 18th APRIL 2015

The recently resurrected District Cooking Competition, an event were a team of Scouts must prepare, cook, serve (and then clean up) a 3 course meal all within 2 hours and within a budget of £20. Knaphill entered two teams into this year’s event.

Scouts had a district cooking competition held at Birchmere camp site. There were seven teams from different scout troops in the Woking District. On arrival we had to set up our event shelter, tables, cooking equipment and prepare all our food.

In my team were Oliver F, Jenna C, Hannah G, Steven M and Daniel C. Luckily it was a nice day although a little windy at times. We had a practice the week before the competition at our normal scout meeting which went well. On the day our menu was Parma ham, Garlic and Parmesan Bruschetta for appetiser, for mains we had an "all in one" spicy pork medallions and rice stir fry, with peppers, and spicy peperami; for desert we had the delicious pancakes with cream and strawberries.  Even if I say so myself the food we cooked tasted very good.

We had two hours to prepare all our food and cook it and then had to take the courses up to the District judges at twenty minute intervals. We were judged on taste, temperature, healthiness and presentation of the dishes, everyone worked hard and getting the timing right was tricky but in the end we came joint first, probably because of our never ending winning spirits.

SUMMER CUB CAMP AT GARNER’S FIELD JULY 2015

Friday 17th July was the day I went to my first Cub camp at Garners Field, in Farnham and I was very excited.  The first thing I did was to put up my tent with Toby. Once it was up we unpacked our bedding then said goodbye to our parents. We had a tent inspection by Akela and our score was 8/10. Later in the evening we had hot-dogs and hot chocolate for supper.

On Saturday morning, I woke up nice and early for breakfast - I had 2 sausages and two bits of bacon. After that I had to wash my cutlery. Next we went on a very long hike which was good fun. We had our lunch on a village green watching men playing cricket. On the way back, we passed a ford and were allowed to have a paddle in it as it was a hot day.

We cooked spaghetti bolognese on our camp stoves for tea and then all sat around the camp fire. We cooked twisters and sang songs with another scout group who were sharing the campsite - we were much louder than they were!

On Sunday morning, I had a sausage and bacon roll - Good tip no washing up required! After breakfast we went on a woodland  obstacle course then I did air rifle shooting. After that after I did water filtering. After lunch we packed our tents away and waited for our parents to come and collect us.

It was my first and best Cub camp, and it won't be my last.             Report by William G. Cub Scout
